Supporting Your Child’s Learning

Parents and carers have a pivotal role to play in supporting education at home. At The Farnley Academy we are determined to truly engage our parents and carers as ‘partners in learning’, closing the triangle between teachers, students and parents and carers to maximise achievement.

Now in its second successful year, our Engage programme is designed to support parents and carers with learning in a wide variety of subjects including the three core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. Working with families in all year groups, there are active and engaging evenings each year which parents and carers are strongly encouraged to attend with their children.

Each evening begins in the Library before everyone breaks off to work with departments taking part in short focused sessions. Based on the principle of ‘pass it on’, families are encouraged to move around and teach each other new skills.  It is intended that this exchange of knowledge and skills will not only take place in school but also in the community where families might begin to help each other out.

After further specialist teaching and support everyone is encouraged to feedback on their experiences whilst enjoying refreshments.  We believe that this lively mix of engagement activities not only enables parents and carers to gain a better understanding of how they can support their children’s learning, but also allows us to build valuable social capital with our community. In addition to teaching staff, Engage involves Post-16 students as Learning Ambassadors so that families can see firsthand the long-term opportunities of education.
