Selecting Post 16 Courses

With 35 courses to choose from supporting your son/daughter in selecting the most suitable pathway of study can be challenging. However, there is guidance available. Year 11 students have the opportunity to discuss their choice of qualifications with a member of the senior leadership team . Year 11 parents evening can highlight areas of excellence in your son/ daughters performance. Ultimately, students must select options of study which they are interested in and will best prepare them for higher education or employment in their chosen area after Post 16. The Post 16 Prospectus has a detailed description of all the courses offered, intended to give an insight into what students will study and the opportunities available to students after Post 16 study.

The Russell Group represent the top 20 universities in The United Kingdom. They have produced a guide for Prospective Post 16 Students to aid students and parents in the course selection process. This guide includes which qualifications would be recommended in gaining entry to university study. Below is a link to this document.

These courses range from degrees in Accounting to Zoology. Each course offered states the entry requirements for the course at different universities. It would be useful to consult this website if your son / daughter is wishing to progress to university study. There is a link below to the course search facility.

Why go to University?

University study is becoming increasingly important, by 2014 it is thought that 80% of employment opportunities will require graduate level of study. During the Post 16 journey students visit a range of universities to gain experience of what universities offer and the university lifestyle. Local universities also visit school and provide workshops for students, parents and carers; these include ‘An Introduction to University’, ‘A Guide to Applying to University’ and ‘A Guide to Financing University Study’.  There are many grants, bursaries and elements of financial support available for students progressing to university.

Realising Career Ambitions
