Supporting Students
The Farnley Academy endeavours to support all Post 16 learners throughout their studies. We understand that Post 16 study can be challenging at times. In preparation for Post 16 study students are issued with a personal use laptop and a £100 Learner Support Package. This enables students to prepare for their studies with the correct equipment and study materials such as text books and stationery.
We also offer a rigorous induction program for students. Within the first 48 hours of Post 16 students access a variety of workshops such as ‘Study Skills’ run by The University of Huddersfield, ‘Literacy Skills: An Essential Post 16 Guide’ run by our English Department and many other skill building activities. This also involves a team building visit to The Climbing Depot in order to develop long lasting peer support and introduce learning partners.
Pastoral Care
Each student at The Farnley Academy has a form tutor who they meet with several times a week. The form tutor is the first point of contact during the day and offers care, support and advice to each of their students. The form tutor also spends an hour a week delivering The Progression Module, therefore understanding each of the students goals and ambitions.
The head of Post 16 has a drop in session every week where students can visit and discuss any problems they are experiencing. The head of Post 16 holds regular mentor meetings with students who are experiencing difficulties, including financial, learning and emotional challenges. The Farnley Academy Learning Mentor and Child Protection Officer Mrs. Baldwin also offers pastoral support for students who require further care and guidance.
Financial support
There are some students who experience financial difficulty during their Post 16 Studies. Students can still benefit from Free School Meals if eligible. There is also the 16 to 19 bursary fund awarded to students dependent upon their home income. This financial support can amount to a weekly payment of between £10 and £30 for Post 16 students.
