It is a genuine privilege to welcome you to The Farnley Academy.
I am enormously proud to serve as Principal of a school that sits at the heart of its community, and I am ambitious about what we can achieve together. Whether you are a current student or parent, considering The Farnley Academy for your child, interested in joining our staff, or simply wanting to learn more about us, I hope our website gives you a strong sense of the academy we are determined to be.
At The Farnley Academy, our ambition is simple: every child should receive an exceptional education, regardless of their background, starting point or individual need.

As part of The GORSE Academies Trust, we share an unwavering commitment to changing the deal for young people and removing the stubborn link between poverty and academic underperformance. A child’s circumstances must never determine the quality of education they receive or place a ceiling on what they can achieve.
I want The Farnley Academy to be a warm yet demanding school.
By warm, I mean a school in which children are known, valued and cared for; where relationships matter, kindness is visible and students feel safe, supported and proud to belong.
By demanding, I mean a school with unapologetically high expectations. We expect students to attend every day, work hard, behave exceptionally well, take pride in themselves and their academy, and make the most of every opportunity available to them. In return, they should expect the adults in this school to work just as hard for them.
For me, there is no contradiction between warmth and high standards. High expectations are an expression of care. We do children no favours by expecting less of them because something in their life makes success more difficult. The pupils carrying the greatest burdens need our greatest expertise. Our responsibility is to understand and support them without ever placing a ceiling on what they can achieve.
I believe deeply in the power of education to change the trajectory of a young person’s life. Academic achievement therefore sits at the heart of what we do. We want every student to leave The Farnley Academy with the strongest possible qualifications and with the Gift of Choice: able to shape their own future because doors have been opened by their education, rather than closed by poverty, low expectations or circumstance.
But an exceptional education must be about more than examination results.
We want our young people to become knowledgeable, articulate, confident and compassionate adults. Through our curriculum, Personal Development programme, student leadership and extensive Enrichment++ offer, students are encouraged to discover new interests, develop their talents and experience opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
Our academy values – Ambitious, Resilient and Kind – matter greatly. They describe not simply what we want students to achieve, but something of the people we want them to become.
Central to all of this is consistency. Great schools do not drift into excellence; they engineer it through excellent teaching, strong routines, high standards and adults working together with a shared sense of purpose. Families should therefore know exactly what to expect from The Farnley Academy every day: excellent teaching, calm and purposeful classrooms, strong pastoral care and adults who notice when a young person needs help.
I also believe passionately in partnership with parents and carers. Schools achieve far more when families and the academy work together. We will communicate openly, celebrate success and address difficulties when they arise. In return, I ask families to support us in maintaining the high expectations that enable every young person to thrive.
The question at the heart of my leadership is a simple one: What is right for children?
That is the basis on which I will make decisions, and it is the standard against which I believe our work should be judged.
Our young people deserve an academy that is ambitious for them, relentless on their behalf and consistent in everything that matters. They deserve an exceptional education, exceptional opportunities and adults who believe deeply in what they can achieve.
That is what I want The Farnley Academy to provide, every day.
I look forward to working with our students, staff, parents, carers and the wider Farnley community as we continue to build an academy where every young person can thrive and of which we can all be exceptionally proud.
Mr Richard Cooper
