The Farnley Academy has been selected to take part in ‘BRIGHT’, a research project that aims to find out if educating students about dental health in school, followed by sending students brushing reminder text messages, can help them prevent tooth decay and tooth ache.
Students in Year 7 and Year 8 have been invited to take part in the initiative and placed into either Group A or Group B. Group A will receive a dental health lesson and daily text messages whereas Group B will not. The objective is to see if the intervention from the research team helps students to look after their teeth better.
This week those students who have opted to be part of the scheme have undergone their initial dental examinations and received a £10 shopping voucher for volunteering. Over the course of the next 3 years they will have a further 2 examinations and will need to complete 6 questionnaires in this period. If they complete the project students will receive a further £5 for their involvement.
Along with the research team, The Farnley Academy and students involved are excited to see the impact of this project. We will keep you informed!
