What is self-regulation?

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.

It includes being able to:

  • Controlling your emotions relevant to the situation,
  • Being able to calm down after something exciting or upsetting,
  • Staying focussed on a task but then being able to refocus on a new task,
  • Controlling impulses,
  • Learning behaviour that helps you get along with other people in new/different situations.

During Lockdown 3.0, what can you do to improve your self regulation?

Managing your screen time:

  • Now more than ever, we are relying on screens to complete our daily tasks. When working all day on Microsoft teams then spending an evening watching TV/on our phones/playing video games – is is vitally important to find time away from the screen. Your long term eye health and brain function will thank you!
  • Why not suggest with your family, that at tea time – could you sit down together for your meal with no tv/phones and talk about your day for an hour

Following a strong routine:

  • Get up at the same time you would if you were going to school and go to bed at the same time. When it is break and lunch, leave your ‘working space’ and stay away from screens (see above!).

Healthy eating:

  • With the lack of movement that you’ll encounter with working from home, you must keep your body healthy by not succumbing to junk food/fizzy drinks. Make the effort to eat a bit of fruit and drink more water for first baby steps if needed but stop and take the time to consider your diet.

Motivation:

  • Whatever age you are, you must find the motivation from within! Follow your routine, drink lots of water, take the correct breaks to reset your brain and your motivation to do well will come. If you find yourself unmotivated, change up your routine or make a new ‘working space’ to learn from and try again!
