Joining The Farnley Academy as a new Senior Leader – during a pandemic – has been nothing less than inspiring. The staff have risen to the challenge of lockdown and remote learning, using new platforms and systems to maximise as many opportunities as possible. Thanks to this, students have been able to access the same outstanding opportunities for learning and enjoyment online.

As Assistant Principal for Student Experience and Key Stage 3 Achievement, this role is fundamentally important. I have never worked in a school that places so much emphasis on the importance of Student Experience – I am extremely proud to take the baton and champion this crucial role. Alongside all of the fantastic staff I have already worked with during these past three weeks, it is clear that Student Experience is what makes The Farnley Academy extremely special. Every member of staff I have met appreciates the importance of Student Experience and feels passionate to ensure that students reap the benefits of a fantastic curriculum and the opportunities available. I share the same belief that enjoyment of learning is harnessed by celebrating all of the precious moments as a child grows – every step of the way. ‘School’ isn’t just a building for students to learn and leave; school is a place for dreams, enjoyment, and a love of learning, every day.

I also look forward to working closely with the Student Leadership Team as they return, so that they continue leading with their voice. I have already seen their innovative ideas turn into fruition! I am looking forward to listening and learning more from the young leaders who attend each day.

I believe that Key Stage 3 has an important responsibility at the start of every child’s school life. The younger years at school are pivotal, exposing students to a broad and exciting curriculum that equips them with the foundation skills, knowledge and understanding they need for Key Stage 4, and more importantly, as well-rounded citizens in the community. Again, I have never worked in a school where every year group and phase in school life is equally as important. I have participated in many meetings already, listening to members of staff with different responsibilities who work together ensuring students are supported and stretched every step of the way at the Academy.

In my role, I will continue to ensure that there is no limit to a student’s potential. Furthermore, as students and staff return to the Academy, I want to ensure that opportunities aren’t limited as a result of Covid-19, and that The Farnley Academy adapts to provide opportunities to enrich every child’s school life, home life and life after school.

During my three weeks at The Farnley Academy, I have seen that the three core values of kindness, ambition and resilience are at the heart of how it lives and breathes, not only as a school, but as a support network for the students, staff and community it serves. I am excited to be part of the Senior Leadership Team as we continue on this journey.
