Thank you to our students in year 8 who have already submitted their subject choices for next year! There is just under a week to go until the deadline (31/3/21) to submit GCSE/BTEC options for Key Stage 4. The year 8 options process this year has been adapted to make students have time to carefully consider their subject choices and have conversations with their parents, teachers and careers advisors.

Remote learning has meant that students have had a different experience in lessons; yet, The Farnley Academy have endeavoured to deliver the same rich curriculum that they would have taught without two lockdowns.

Based on the GCSE and BTEC subject choices students have made, and the time taken to consider their options, it is clear that our students have a high level of maturity and understand that their choices are significantly important for them developmentally. However, balancing students’ learning experience and academic achievement is one that we ensure students carefully consider. Our careers advisers, Miss Rohini and Miss Smith, have supported students with their choices and given the students confidence as look forward to the year ahead.

It is pleasing that students have chosen a mixture of both practical and theory-based subjects. The Year 8 ‘taster’ sessions have exposed students to an exciting range of subjects so that they enter Year 9 with enthusiasm and passion for all of their subjects. The Farnley Academy’s broad and balanced curriculum ensures that a foundation of knowledge at Key Stage 3 is embedded and enables students to build on to it at Key Stage 4.

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) that students will go on to study at Key Stage 4 means that they will study a plethora of subjects that keep their options open for further study and future careers, wherever they may lead. At The Farnley Academy, this gives us the assurance that students will leave school equipped for life in modern Britain and the wider world.
