International Women’s Day seeks to celebrate women’s achievements, as well as act as a catalyst for change when it comes to gender equality.
Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:
- celebrate women’s achievements
- raise awareness about women’s equality
- lobby for accelerated gender parity
- fundraise for female-focused charities
The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is ‘Choose To Challenge‘. A challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change. So let’s all #ChooseToChallenge.
It has been observed for over 100 years and is now celebrated around the world. 2018 is a particularly poignant year as it marks the centenary of women gaining the right to vote.
During form time students across all year groups have explored the suffrage movement as well as looking at contemporary issues that are impacting women’s rights. Celebrity culture has highlighted issues such as the gender pay gap and shocking cases of harassment highlighted at events such as the Brits and the Oscars. At The Farnley Academy we think it is crucial to engage students in conversations regarding these issues and stress the need for change.
