Last week, on Thursday 3rd March, the annual event of World Book Day graced the Farnley Academy. This year’s was bigger than ever, with a record amount of students dressing up and getting involved in the events!
We dedicated the entire week to all things literary. In the library space, a number of events and competitions ran, such as:
- Bookmark making
- Write your own story
- Mindful colouring in
- Create a miniature book
- Mystery books
- Lucky dip
- Numerous book quizzes
- The fancy dress competition!
In addition to these additional activities, students across the school engaged with reading in a more explicit way across all subjects. On Thursday, short stories were read at the start of every lesson. Students also had the opportunity to vote for their favourite books that we wanted to add to our already packed library.
The competition on Thursday was the best we have seen yet. Students went above and beyond to dress as their favourite literary characters. Some, however, stood above the rest! Our winners were:
First place: Chase Laing as Doctor Octopus
Second place: Sofia Rodriguez Gonzalez as Queen of the North
Third place: Paige Shortall as The Mad Hatter
Fourth place: Joshua Caulfield as Sherlock Holmes
Fifth place: Roshaun Ingham as Batman
All students received literary prizes for their fantastic costumes!
A reading house competition will run for the remainder of this month – students will win house points based on how many books they can get through!
