Before half term the academy took part in a range of tasks to raise awareness of the watermarked event LGBTQ+ History Month. LGBTQ+ History Month was an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the importance of protected characteristics such as sexual orietnation, sex, gender, religion and disability. This watermarked day focussed on the theme of ‘behind the lens’ to raise awareness of the journey of LGBT in society, within the law and within the world of work.

Throughout the week we participated in a number of activities to raise awareness.

  • Miss Pogson led assemblies this week linked to the theme of LGBTQ+ History Month – behind the lens and the importance of watermarked events.
  • All curriculum areas completed a range of tasks linked ot this theme: In PSHE and Citizenship students looked at protected characteristics and the importance of these.
  • In Art students went behind the lens to explore a range of LGBT artists and their influence on art as we know it.
  • In PE, students were introduced to a range of sporting personalities linked to the LGBT community.
  • In Science and IT, students looked at the work of Alan Turing and the role that IT and Science has played.
  • In English students have been going ‘behind the pen’ to learn about poetry linked specifically to writers who have faced challenges based on protected characteristics.
  • In Business, students have explored enterprise tasks linked to protected characteristcs such as LGBT.
  • In Technology, students have gone behind the lens to explore a range of job roles specific to the technology industry.
  • In History students have continued to explore the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the UK in the 1980s. This has included a focus on some of the homophobia which was exhibited in relation to this period.
  • In Geography students have used their graph skills to analyse global trends linked to human rights.
  • Miss Nash and The House Team encouraged students to participate in the House Challenge of deisigning badges to celebrate the watermarked event. The purpose of the activity was to promote inclusivity and tolerance.

We do hope the students enjoyed this focus and have learnt more about their protected characteristics!
