There are currently eighteen Student Librarians helping out in the library (with regular requests from other students, keen to flex their literary muscles!)

TFA is extremely lucky to have so many caring, intelligent and assertive students who want to make the library as wonderful a place as possible. There is very much a community feel amongst the librarians, a lot of them not knowing each other well beforehand and in some cases not at all. When they come together, they are ready to be a team and do what they need to do, but they all come with their own skillset.

Lexie is passionate about books and is always looking for the next book to read or recommend. Marta is wise beyond her years and completes any task you give her with scrupulous attention to detail. Evie is so hardworking and always gets the job done, James is wonderful at making the newbies feel welcome and showing them the ropes, the initiative Reuben and Kieran show is second to none but all of the Student Librarians are caring and enthusiastic. When tidying the sections, you will often hear them mumbling the alphabet under their breath (something that never leaves you, no matter how old you are).

We make a point of making the role as interesting and varied as possible for them, in the hope that they take a plethora of book knowledge away with them. Not only do we want them to go away with a passion for books, we want them to have an understanding of how some libraries run, e.g. using the Dewey decimal system, as well as some elements of the book trade. But they are learning so much more than that; they are learning teamwork, reliability, accountability, how enjoyable working can be, how important it is to share your passion. With the current focus on literacy, it is crucial that we have these young people acting as advocates for books.

There is a lot to do in the library and often not enough hours in the day to get it all done. But the Student Librarians make all the difference, from book-backing to reshelving, labelling to creating quizzes, running the mobile library to support of all things library-related: World Book Day, the Readathon, Bake Offs, Poetry Slams… They do it all! Not only are we unbelievably grateful, we are also incredibly proud of them all.

See below a picture of some of them engaged in the author we were fortunate to have on World Book Day – an event that they were key in planning!
