Hilary Hall

Assistant Principal - Designated Child Protection Officer

Hilary graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2007 with an undergraduate degree in History. She was accepted onto the Deloitte graduate scheme in Management Consultancy and spent several years working on large-scale projects at public sector and charitable organisations, which brought her to Yorkshire. Unwilling to relinquish her love of History, she completed an MA part-time alongside her work in project management, and in 2012 received funding to undertake a PhD at the University of Sheffield. This gave her the experience of teaching in a Higher Education setting and she discovered her passion for educating young people. When she completed her PhD, Hilary trained as a secondary History teacher with Teach First and was placed in an academy in Bradford where she became Head of Year. She joined TFA as Head of Year 7 in 2023 , keen to work within the GORSE trust, whose values align so closely to her own - in particular the belief that education should give every young person the Gift of Choice. Through her role as a classroom teacher and pastoral leader, Hilary seeks every opportunity to support students to be motivated, empowered and resilient individuals who thrive in school. Her commitment to providing young people with exceptional pastoral support led her to be appointed as Assistant Principal responsible for Inclusion and Safeguarding from September 2024.

Michelle Williams

Attendance Officer: Year 7

Michelle worked for a bank for 17 years, before taking voluntary redundancy. Michelle and her family then agreed that they wanted to take the opportunity to make a difference to children and young people who were less fortunate than themselves. They decided to become a Foster family and did this for 6 years, providing many children ranging from babies to teenagers with a safe place to stay. It could be incredibly challenging at times, but also very rewarding as she watched them grow. When circumstances changed last year, Michelle wanted to put her experiences to good use. Therefore, she applied for her current role as an Attendance Officer. Michelle is very passionate about everyone receiving a good education and believes excellent attendance is key!

Jennie Fozard

Attendance Officer: Year 9

Prior to joining The Farnley Academy as an Attendance Officer Jennie worked in a range of roles in education. She began by volunteering for 18 months in a primary school before accepting a full-time role at another school where she worked as a teaching assistant for the next five and-a-half years supporting some of the most vulnerable students with their work, often on a 1:1 basis. In addition, she has worked as a swimming teacher for two years, predominantly with children in Year 4.

In her free time, she loves nothing better than spending time with her two children at their various extracurricular activities, including football, competitive swimming and tumbling, whilst also occasionally volunteering at local galas. For Jennie, constantly working with children and helping them to achieve their very best is a passion, both inside and outside of an educational setting.

Victoria Mulhern

Attendance Officer: Year 10

After dedicating 20 years to a rewarding career as a dental nurse, Victoria made the decision to change careers and pursue roles in the education sector. Her journey at The Farnley Academy began as a receptionist, where she quickly discovered a passion for supporting students and families in a different capacity. This led to her decision to become an attendance officer, where she combines her strong communication skills, attention to detail, and caring nature to help ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive through regular school attendance. Her passion to help others and make a difference also helps within this role as she believes very strongly that all students are entitled to a great education and to an enjoyable time at school.

At The Farnley Academy, attendance is our obsession!

Research proves that there is a very clear relationship between excellent school attendance and academic achievement. Year after year, the students with the best school attendance achieve the best results. We are passionate about providing students with the best possible life chances and as such, know they have to ‘be here to get there.’

All students at The Farnley Academy are set an attendance target of 97% or above.

Your attendance target is 97%, the 97 is highlighted in a bright colour

Students with 97% attendance and above are more likely to:

  • Be appointed to a well paid job.

  • Make the best progress in their subjects.

  • Develop good habits for work and wider life.

  • Achieve higher than average grades in their GCSEs.

  • Secure a place at a college, University or a training course.

  • Maintaining strong and sound friendships.

Parents, carers and families are therefore asked to ensure that their young person is in school every day of term.

The law states that students can miss school if they are:

  • Too unwell to attend school*;
  • It has been authorised in advance by the Principal (such as a religious observance or a funeral).

*As per government guidance, where a child’s attendance becomes a concern, the Academy can request medical evidence to support reasons for absence.

The table below details the number of days and lessons of invaluable learning opportunities missed over a year with attendance at different levels.

Attendance Process

If your child is absent from the Academy you must report the absence before 8.30am by visiting the school website and using the Report Student Absence button at the top of the page. Alternatively, you can telephone the Attendance Line (0113 2630741) to speak directly to an attendance officer. Please bear in mind that phone lines may be very busy in the morning, therefore the website is our preferred method of contact to report an absence.

  • If we do not receive communication, you will receive a phone call home from one of our team of dedicated Attendance Officers.

  • A home visit may be made depending on the student’s attendance record and the nature of the absence.

  • On returning to the Academy the student must take responsibility to catch up on work missed.

Students’ attendance is monitored against our Traffic Light Group system.

Home visits will be conducted by members of the Attendance Team if a student’s attendance is of concern. The purpose of making home visits is to have a conversation with families about their young person’s attendance, complete a safeguarding check and offer support where applicable.

Please be aware that The Farnley Academy works closely with Leeds City Council and will transfer any cases of persistently poor attendance for possible prosecution in either the Family or Magistrates court.

Morning arrival and Punctuality

The arrival time for all year groups is 8.15am-8.30am. The main student gate between the Bronte and Asquith Buildings opens at 08:15 to welcome all students for the day. Upon arrival students have access to breakfast and can remain in the outside quad area / downstairs dining area prior to going to form at 8.30am. It is imperative that students arrive within the 15-minute arrival window.

A bell will sound at 08:29, indicating that students still arriving on site have one minute until the gate closes. The student gate will close at 08:30, at which point anyone still arriving will be deemed late, unless communication has been made with the Academy beforehand to provide a suitable reason. Students will then enter through the Student Entrance in the Asquith Building, where they will be signed in with a member of the Attendance Team. Any student arriving late to school without a suitable reason will be sanctioned in line with Gorse PD policy

The 100% Attendance Club

Maintaining an attendance record of 100% is a brilliant achievement and one that we are delighted to reward and celebrate. Students who achieve 100% attendance will be given a much deserved place in the 100% Attendance Club. Membership of the club entitles students to a range of rewards, including celebration activities, trips and pop up events throughout the year.

A 100% Attendance Club pin badge is presented to students when they enter the club. It is expected that this badge is worn with pride, on the school jumper, at all times around the Academy. This is a student’s pass to a raft of rewards and treats including a specially allocated queue in the dining room, ensuring priority and speedy serving at lunch and break times. If any student is found to be abusing the badge, for example by loaning it to another student, the privilege of being in the 100% club will be removed.

Students that are members of the 100% attendance club in September are those that secured 100% attendance at The Farnley Academy during the whole of the previous academic year. After October half term, we will welcome to the club every student that has achieved 100% attendance during the first half term of the year. Students stay in the club and experience all the perks that go alongside this for as long as they maintain 100% attendance. This will be reviewed weekly by the Attendance Team and any student who drops below 100% will hand their pin badge back to school.

Throughout the academic year, we host many large scale events to reward our students for their fantastic attendance. These include festivals in school and numerous trips to popular choices such as Arcade Club, Flamingo Land, Go Karting, Cinema, Bowling and Laser Zone.

We end the year in style with our Farnley Festival – the biggest event of the year, where we welcome fairground rides, stalls and games onto our school site and give students the opportunity to celebrate their fantastic attitude toward attendance for a full day with their friends.

Club Points

At The Farnley Academy, we firmly believe that all students should be rewarded and celebrated for maintaining strong attendance. We are therefore extremely proud of our 100% Club Points initiative, which sees all students who have 100% attendance in a week receive a “100% Club Point”. Students can use their 100% Club Points to ‘buy’ access to the 100% Club Attendance incentives such as the weekly Pop Up Events, Queue Jump, and large-scale events that we use to reward attendance. This means that EVERYONE can still access the events that are available to 100% Attendance Club members if they can save up enough points. Not only this but we have cabinets filled with prizes which students can “buy” using their club points! These are regularly restocked throughout the year to keep the rewards coming!

Students can also win additional 100% Club Points at the weekly Pop Up Events, in Form Time Competitions, assemblies and during ad hoc additional competitions that take place across the year.

100% Attendance Club Exceptional Circumstances

We recognise 100% Attendance as being a huge achievement and one that needs significant reward and celebration! Therefore, only students with 100% Attendance will be granted access to the club. The 100% attendance club is a reward for those students who show resilience and excellent attitudes to school. We do, however, recognise that in some cases, absence from school is unavoidable. Examples include students being absent from school:

  • to mark a religious observance, including attending the wedding of an immediate family member
  • to attend a specialist medical appointment related to a lifelong medical condition.
  • to grieve for, and attend a funeral of an immediate family member.

In all cases where a parent / carer is seeking an exception to be made, the Principal must authorise this. Please complete a 100% Club Exceptional Circumstances form and return to the academy by email or post.

Holidays in Term Time

The Farnley Academy will never authorise a holiday during term time.

As an academy we recognise that financial pressures and work commitments sometimes make it difficult to take holidays outside of school time. However, we ask for your full support in ensuring that your son / daughter is in school all of the time to access an outstanding education.

If you choose to take an unauthorised leave of absence the case will be transferred to Leeds City Council to process a penalty fine.

College Interviews

Due to safeguarding reasons, all students must be collected from school for college interviews.
