Over the next few weeks and after the Easter holiday, students at The Farnley Academy will be engaging with some exceptionally important content. We want all of our students to engage with the current movement of Black Lives Matter. In order to support this, in English lessons, students will be studying a range of influential and inspirational texts. These texts will then springboard into lessons in which students can discuss, debate, and create writing to help them understand this crucial movement.

In years 7-10, all students within English lessons will follow this scheme of work. The scheme is designed to educate students on this movement to support and improve their cultural awareness of the world around them. In addition to this, the scheme also works alongside the key English skills and content that students must learn to be successful in English at GCSE. For our year 11 students, we have designed 6 lessons for students to engage with. We understand that this is an extremely busy time for our year 11s to focus on outcomes but we still prioritise the importance of this movement, and thus, they will engage with this on a smaller scale.

As well as the fantastic content that students will engage with in English lessons, we will be hosting a range of activities for students to take part in as a school-wide project. House competitions, assemblies and other exciting opportunities will arise for our students. We want them to be immersed within this content and to understand their role. Furthermore, our core values of ambition, resilience and kindness will most certainly be explored through this topic and we aim to support our students in understanding their role within society alongside this movement.

We are excited to update you on the phenomenal work that students complete around this – watch this space!
