What is the Burnet News Club?
The Burnet News Club (BNC) is a school club, delivered by a charity called The Economist Educational Foundation. This club gives students valuable knowledge about important issues in the news, the skills to explore different points of view and to make up their own minds, and the confidence to have their own say. It allows students the opportunity to be involved in online discussion with other young people in different communities across the UK and to discuss these topics with experts. Students also take part in competitions, have their work published online and have the chance to receive an award at a prestigious ceremony at the end of the school year.
How has the club been received by students?
Students at The Farnley Academy have taken a keen and insightful interest in the discussions presented by the BNC. The first term has focused on the financial crisis and students have been engaged in a variety of activities and discussion to deepen their understanding and knowledge of this topic. Students have engaged vivaciously with the various viewpoints offered, with high-level debates now becoming second nature to the students. Students have been recently involved in producing their final piece on this topic, with students striving to place TFA on the nationwide leader board, and competing effervescently for the chance to attend the BNC’s prestigious end of year awards ceremony.
