On Friday 1st February, students had the opportunity to take part in an exciting event at The Farnley Academy. Members of the Burnet News Club were faced with an extremely controversial news issue, and were given the challenge to debate this issue throughout the day, eventually deciding on a resolution. Other schools across the country, and within The Gorse Academies Trust, also took part in this day, and students at TFA contributed expertly to the discussions.
Within this day, students were faced with a variety of different viewpoints and arguments, and they were encouraged to debate these viewpoints to try to reach a consensus. Students used their questioning and deeper-thinking to skilfully negotiate the issue at hand. Many students had the opportunity to act as journalists, and to relay important information to members of the group. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the day was receiving a FaceTime video call from the one and only Alastair Stewart, famous for being a huge part of the ITV News team. The day was a huge success, and proved a fantastic opportunity for all students involved.
