This year, The Farnley Academy are- once again- taking part in the annual charity Readathon. Students will read in order to raise money for the charity Read for Good: a charity that motivates children to read for fun because we know that loving reading changes lives.
For children in hospital, books and stories are particularly important – they comfort, distract, reassure and entertain. Read for Good provides a regular supply of brand new books along with storyteller visits to brighten up the days of children in all of the UK’s main children’s hospitals. Children unable to leave their beds can choose books from their specially designed mobile bookcase which wheels right up to their bedside. Because they are brand new, the books are safe for those at high risk of infection. Read for Good’s regular supply of beautiful, brand-new books and visits from professional storytellers, offer children in hospitals, schools and other settings, the chance to escape to other worlds in their imagination.
Children in schools are motivated to read using Read for Good’s free Readathon kits, which encourage them to choose whatever they like to read – from comics to classics, and audio books to blogs – all whilst raising money to get books to children in hospital, and books for their school. They have a Kids Page plus inspiring Ideas and book recommendations on their website to encourage children to read for pleasure at home and in school and their new Track My Read® tool engages pupils in reading for pleasure wherever they are, providing rich insights for teachers and librarians at the same time.
Two years ago, when the school last took part, the students raised over £300 for Read for Good: the majority of which went to our local hospital- the Leeds General Infirmary. This year we will be supporting our students to raise money for this fantastic cause as well as inspiring their love of reading.
