This year’s Sports Championships was a hugely successful event for all that were involved. Each morning students competed in a sport for their respective house. Students were allocated to either football, tag rugby, volleyball, table tennis or rounders and demonstrated high levels of teamwork, skill and resilience to achieve points for their team and house. It was a delight to see so many students taking parts and setting a really high standard of competition. There was a real buzz of excitement around the academy, particularly from Mr Cosgrove, who was determined to cheer Asquith on!
In the afternoon, selected pupils were chosen to compete in throwing events (javelin, shotput, discus) and track events (100m, 200m, 300m 800m, 4X100 relay). The pupils who performed in these events were cheered on by the rest of their year group, as they worked tirelessly to try and become the number one athlete in their year group for each discipline.
The event was meticulously organised by Mr Bird who ensured that all three days ran smoothly and efficiently. Alongside the P.E team, there was great leadership on show from our Y10 BTEC Sport students who helped run events, encouraged, motivated and even participated at times to help all students over the line.
It was a delight to see the sportsmanship on show by all who took part. Jack in Year 9 showing great camaraderie to run with one of his fellow house members to ensure they finished the race was a big highlight, hearing all the pupils on the embankment cheering on all pupils regardless of where they finished was heart-warming to see, hearing the Year 7s perform renditions of chants on repeat to spur their team showed how much they valued and enjoyed the day. Clearly, we have a plethora of outstanding and talented pupils at The Farnley Academy, which we will continue to celebrate and nurture, as we aspire to give all pupils great sporting experiences throughout their time here.
