On Thursday 22nd of April we celebrated World Earth Day here at the Farnley Academy. Pupils took part in a range of activities to celebrate and spread awareness of our planet. During form time pupils created their own pledges for actions in their day to day lives which will have an impact on our planet. Being Farnley students they were of course, intelligent and ambitious.
Here are some examples:
“I promise to use a refillable water bottle”, “I will turn off the lights to save electricity if I am the last one in classroom” “I will save the planet by walking to school instead of going in the car”. These actions, the installation of cooled water fountains and recent planting of 300 trees certainly helps!
These will be displayed in the Geography department in collaboration with the Creative Earth Competition that was run earlier this year in Geography lessons to show how the students at Farnley feel about the planet and how they want to make the world a better place to live.
Then the day got even more exciting through the collaboration of House and World Earth Day. At both lunches, students had the opportunity to win a giant panda or tiger, whilst considering the rate in which these animals are becoming extinct. We had over 430 entries and we came out with two winners who guess correctly how many pandas were left and how many tigers.
A huge congratulations to Klaudyna S, who guessed 3890 tigers left and Kiedis D, who correctly guessed there was 1864 pandas left on our planet!
Let’s all keep doing our bit.
