On Thursday 7 February 19 Year 9 students visited the Music Department at the University of York. They enjoyed two workshops, a tour of the department and a Question and Answer session with a first year Music undergraduate student, all led by the Music in Education Group. The level of musicianship and general music knowledge from pupils was clear to see as they gave detailed explanations and answers to questions posed to them. This excellent theoretical knowledge was then transformed into practical application with two workshops based around ‘African Drumming’ and ‘Samba’ music. The pupils approached there playing with passion and commitment and our group leader Emily frequently commented on the excellent skill of our musicians. During the tour of the department our students were taken aback by the quality of the facilities and it was clear to see how inspired the students became about the possibility of studying Music at University. I have no doubt that we will be going back for more excellent music provision with the Music in Education Group.
